On Friday 19th January, Rupinder (Rupi) Singh of RSR Marketing (in collaboration with the Tollygunge Club), organized a musical extravaganza by bringing the musical group Humsufi to entertain the Tolly club members and their guests. However, there was a caveat – the evening was to support the NGO Ashari who run an Animal Shelter-cum-Hospital and Research Institute in the city. Ashari’s work is supported totally through private donations from the public and the NGO tries to get stray animals adopted into good homes in the city. They provide medical services, food, shelter and care for these pets.

The evening began with a brief introduction to Ashari which was followed by a heart-felt plea by Actress Swastika whose family has adopted dozens of stray dogs, over the years. She pleaded with the audience to do their share too and protect stray dogs within their localities and try to adopt as many as possible as they bring so much joy to the household and family.

Finally Humsufi, an indo-Sufi fusion rock band took to the stage and began with a slow progression of their Sufi hits building to the more popular pop and rock tunes They kept the audience mesmerized throughout the evening with many singing aloud to their hits which included among others Piye re, Kinna Sona Tenu, Chhap Tilak, Sansoki Mala and Damadam Mast Kalandar.

A big vote of thanks must be given to Rupi for organizing this evening, Tolly Club for playing host and for Humsufi for agreeing to donate their time for such a worthy cause.
