The Academy of Fine Arts finally hosted its much awaited exhibition of restored paintings last month. A lot of speculation had been adrift for some time now about the absence of Lady Ranu Mukherji’s personal art collection (which comprises the Academy’s core collection) for public viewing. But the Academy set all such gossip mongers packing with a short and interesting exhibition of restored paintings from its collection ‘Masterpieces – a Glimpse’.

For the privileged few who got to view it, the exhibition was a trip down the memory lane of the heydays of Bengal art. Arranged in a chronological order from the oldest to the newest, the exhibition predominantly showcased Masters from the Bengal School, Gaganendranath Tagore, Jamini Roy, Benode Behari Mukherjee, Atul Bose, J.P. Ganguly, Nirode Mazumdar, Paritosh Sen and, Jogen Chowdhury, apart from few pan Indian artists like, M.F. Hussain, N.S. Bendre, J. Swaminathan.

The restoration project was made possible by an onetime grant of Rs 50 Lakhs by the Ministry Of Culture; and work had been underway since 2015 by the National Research Laboratory for Conservation of Cultural Property, Lucknow. A total of 212 paintings were restored of which 40 oils by the Masters were exhibited at the ‘North Gallery’ in this exhibition. Curator, Dr. Baishali Ghosh assures us the Academy is planning to showcase the rest of the 212 pieces by the end of the year through series of exhibitions. We look forward to that!
