The Loreto Order – 175 Years of Sisterhood and Camaraderie
The Loreto movement in The Southeast Asian region has had a profound impact on the complete education of generations of students. It's 175 year celebrations had a series of meaningful events. The initial service held at Science City was beautifully inclusive. Never had Calcutta seen so many nuns, and Bishops from far off regions including the Archbishop of Calcutta himself and the first Cardinal of Bangladesh. They performed some ceremonial acts, and the service had the audience participating in reverence. A large number of students were on the stage, singing in various languages, hymns that reverberated throughout. The theme song showed how Loreto is moving ahead with its theme Remember-Renew-Reimage.
A ‘Legacy Walk’ through the streets of Calcutta to the Raj Bhavan sported over 2,000 student, teachers and nuns from the Loreto educational institutions and its Rainbow schools where a remembrance and cultural program was organized by the students with Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi in attendance. The Governor spoke highly about the ‘sense of duty’ and ‘discipline’ that Loreto schools instilled in every pupil and highlighted the contribution of the Loreto nuns in taking education for women to a level of unsurpassed excellence.
On the 7th and 8th of January, a get-together was organized by the Loreto Alumni. A wonderful meet-and-greet of past students took place at Loreto House followed by a cultural program put up by the current students. Snacks were served to all and a jamboree with gifts and a lucky draw ensued. The pièce de résistance took place at the ITC Sonar where the ambiance with old reminiscent street-food (puchkas, chat, jhaal muri), was followed by a scrumptious buffet dinner only added to the wonderful camaraderie displayed by the ex-Loretoites who, accompanied by the teachers and nuns, broke out into spontaneous hymns and school songs.
