The Consulate General of Japan in Kolkata organized a day-long Japanese cultural festival to portray several cultural aspects of Japan, including its traditional and pop-culture, all under one roof. The Utsav took place at the Hotel Hindustan International, Kolkata on 11 November 2018.

Japan evokes images of scenic beauty of the mountain, the Cherry Blossom trees in bloom, the Bullet Train, Origami and many others that make you want to visit an Utsav like this one. Kolkata is always alive with festivals and the Japan Festival added to the joy of the city.

Right after the inauguration there was a presentation of Japanese Melodies. This was followed by Ikebana the flower arrangement. This was very interesting and demonstrated an artistic way of making your home a very aesthetic place.

We got to see a glimpse of Tokyo through the NHK Drama Screening, Home Sweet Tokyo. There was an interesting Karate demonstration also. For those who admire Calligraphy or Shodo it was a treat to be there. Another interesting event for the day was the screening of the Anime movie screening of The Garden of Words.

The session got lively when a quiz on Japan was held. There were many visitors in the Utsav who seemed to know a lot about Japan which made the session very interesting. Equally interesting was the Kolkata Cosplay Competition.

Paper Folding or Origami was an art that I always enjoyed and did so once again. The best experience of course was Chado or the Way of Tea. All the aspects of Japan and its cultural side were presented beautifully that made you want to know and visit the place.

The day-long cultural festival of Japan organised by the Consulate General of Japan and supported by the Japan National Tourism Organisation and the Japanese Association of Commerce and Industry in Kolkata made the day a very happy one. It was an interaction that left me with images of Japan that I would cherish for a while and added travel to Japan on my wish list.
