It is a well-known fact that Pappu Sardar adores Madhuri Dixit and uses her image to promote socially conscious messages throughout Jamshedpur. His deliciously hand-prepared Chaats at Manohar Chaat, is a must visit to the city, and is full of Madhuri’s photographs with slogans devised by Pappu himself who proudly asks us to read each one carefully. He has done numerous videos and although he isn’t tech savvy, his friend uploads all his information and shares the same with us. This was my second visit to his eatery, and a year later and he remembered me well.

What I found interesting wasn’t the fact that he is such a great Madhuri fan but the fact that he is an individual who understands his need to contribute to society and is always active in numerous campaigns be it on road safety, pollution, voting etc.

The most wonderful surprise was when he proudly mentioned that he had someone from Bangalore come to the city to work on his sleigh for the Christmas festival where he would visit a number of places handing out much needed woolen shawls and blankets to the needy.

During the Ramadan month, he shuts his restaurant for an hour and provides free sustenance to the indigent who have just broken their fast, thus sharing in their festivities and happiness.

He is also a devout follower of Ma Durga (he has 2 of her posters framed on the walls) and has a special prayer room for her too. In today’s world of religious divisiveness, here is a man who has opened his heart and mind to all and leads by example! This wonderful man, proud of his need to help others and bred in Jamshedpur is a model citizen and illustrates what a small city which engenders religious tolerance and social responsibility has produced.
