The Eastern India Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Federation (EIGMEF) celebrated its silver jubilee year with the largest B2B Garment EXPO in Eastern India organized at the Biswa Bangla Center from 3-5 July 2018. This year’s Expo was bigger and better than previous years in every possible way with over 300 brands and 8,000 retailers in attendance.

The focus was on enhancing the image of Brand Bengal within the garment industry of India from a low quality and low value cluster to a scaled-up manufacturing infrastructure with the latest state-of-the-art machinery and technology to churn out high quality garments. Very few people are aware that Bengal is the national leader in infant wear, kids wear, leggings, inner wear and wedding sarees, and the EXPO show-cased these clusters for all to see.

Other important avenues where EIGMEF has made an impact is that with an existing 2.5 million square feet of operational manufacturing space EIGMEF is all set to create an additional 2.5million square feet of manufacturing space in the next 2 years. This will revolutionize the quality of production, productivity and perception of this industry.

Infrastructure is being developed in a very planned and systematic manner in Bengal where clusters of garment manufacturers operating from a single geographic space will reap the benefits of localized development. Currently, there are 2 large Garment Parks and a further 2 parks will get operational within the next 2-year cycle.

EIGMEF also proposes to develop infrastructure for a 365 Day Marketing Hub in Kolkata so ensure a substantial increase in the footfalls of retailers from all parts of the country, and compound the overall growth of sales from this region.

Kolkata’s geographic location makes it the focal point and Hub in garment sourcing for the entire eastern part of the country including states such as Bihar, Orissa, Jharkhand and all of the 7 North Eastern states too.

The EIGMEF Managing Committee held a Press Conference on the 3rd morning at the Convention Center which was very well attended by a number of the city media and was followed by the official diya-lighting ceremony later in the day. Retailers, wholesalers and distributors flocked to the various stalls placing their orders throughout the 3-day event. On the 4th evening, EIGMEF had organized a Sonu Nigam concert at the Convention Center Hall, which was a huge hit with the Kolkata public!

A large Food Court provided meals and refreshments throughout the day for visitors as well as those participating in the EXPO as not only was the Convention Center but also a large Hangar created especially for the EXPO filled to capacity with vendors from all over the country. Most vendors were extremely appreciative of EIGMEF’s support for their industry and for organizing the largest B2B event for them. They enjoyed interacting with new clients and hoped that EIGMEF would continue to assist them in this manner.
