1. Things to Do: In Berlin, walking tours are a must to ensure that you get a good grasp of the historical significance of this beautiful city. The historical tours generally last between 3.5-4 hours and cover sites such as:

Alexanderplatz; Museum Island; Humboldt University; Fuhrer Bunker; Stroll along the iconic Berlin Wall and see the ‘Palace of Tears’ and the ‘Death Strip’ and follow Unter den Linden to the Brandenburg Gate. Then check out the rebuilt Reichstag and the Holocaust Memorial and hear the amazing stories of Cold War Berlin at Checkpoint Charlie. Observe the city’s modernization at both, Potsdamer Platz and Friedrichstrasse.

You could also try the Cold War and Nazi Germany tours. There are also day trips by bus to the Dachau concentration camp and to Dresden, or Potsdam with about 150 buildings and gardens of the UNESCO World Heritage Site to view.

2. Transport to Use: Definitely recommended is a 72 hour ABC bus/tram/train ticket which ensures that you also get a discount on tours and on the museums. But if you do not want to take public transportation then purchase an 18 Euro pass to visit all the museums on the Museum Island.

3. Museum to Visit: However, if you are short of time I would strongly recommend the awe-inspiring Pergamon Museum with its Panorama tour.

The museum currently consists of three wings housing the Middle East Museum, Antiquity Collection and the Islamic Art Museum. The most impressive is the Ishtar Gate of Babylon and the Roman Market Gate of Miletus. One gets immediately transported in time with the guided commentary into a mystical and wondrous age. The architecture is key at the Museum which is filled with beautiful tile work, rugs, ceramics, fabulously sculptured doorways and some stunning artefacts.

4. Where to Stay: It is recommended that you stay near the Alexanderplatz area which is a very happening part of the city for shopping, dining and also accessible for buses and trams to other parts of the city. Travelling by tram is a delightful experience as you get to see the city from a different perspective, it is an energy efficient and people-friendly experience.

5. What to Eat: A surprising must do when in Berlin is to try all the different kinds of cuisines possible. Food here is relatively inexpensive and of very good quality. The doner kebabs are a plenty with the large Turkish minority residing in the country, but also try the different varieties of European, Asian and African cuisine. The food will not disappoint you.

6. Where to Go: A walk through what is considered as the Champs-Élysées of Berlin − the ‘Unter den Linden’ up to the Brandenburg Gate is highly recommended. You are surrounded by numerous parks and trees, statues and restaurants and a wide interrupted road for miles. You may almost forget that you are in the heart of the city with such peaceful surroundings.
