Strings and Beats

The Japanese Koto and Shamisen player, Sumie Kaneko, who is also a jazz singer and songwriter, visited Kolkata once again, after her visit in November 2017. This time too, like before, she enthralled music lovers of Kolkata. Two events were organized this year: one at the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR) and the other at Rabindra Okakura Bhavan in Salt Lake.

Sumie is truly is a master in the traditional repertoire of these very ancient musical instruments. What is very unique was how she pioneered the use of these very melodious musical instruments in jazz and experimental music.

Having developed a bond with our City of Joy she performed along with our own Tanmoy Bose at the ICCR, which witnessed a jugalbandi that evening to be remembered and cherished by all music lovers.
