Have you ever seen a single individual hold the attention of a rapt audience for two and a half hours, doing a comedy show?  If not, you should have been there watching Sorabh Pant doing “The Rant of the Pant” at the Birla Sabhaghar on 24th June 2017.  He was quite brilliant.

It was a packed house with some enthusiasts sitting on the stairs.  Even while he waited for the audience to settle down, Sorabh interacted with the audience to get the mood flowing.  There was a mixture of all kinds of tongue-in-cheek, slapstick, sarcasm and self-deprecating humor.  Comedy is perhaps the most difficult genres to carry out alone on stage, which is why it came as a surprise that he was able to keep the attention, the humor and the involvement right through the long performance.  Usually, 3-4 artists share the stage for various periods of time.  For good comedy, the timing has to be just right, the reference just enough and subject appropriate.  A stand-up comedian must also be able to take direct hits on his personality from the audience and not be afraid to offend some people.  There will always be some in the audience who may choose to take umbrage.  He has to be able to take it in his stride.

Sorabh moved from politics in general, to politicians in particular, movie stars and interpersonal relationships to women’s rights, cultural sensitivity issues to Trump and Brexit; he didn’t spare anyone at all.  And he touched on important issues with amazing alacrity which was both startling and appropriate.  Holding the attention of so many people, for over two hours, and that too single handedly, was no mean feat, and by the time he closed, the audience was still yearning for more.
