Kolkata’s Little Pleasures Patisserie – A Must for Pastry and Sweet Lovers

How would you feel if you got to present Sachin Tendulkar, the Little Master himself, with a cake featuring one of his most iconic moments? How about if this happened on the day before his 45th birthday? And what if he and Anjali, his wife, absolutely love, so that your life-long dream is fulfilled?

When you’re Shripriya Gupta, this is your everyday reality.

On 23rd April 2018, at Taj Land’s End Hotel in Mumbai, Boria Majumdar’s book “Eleven Gods and a Billion Indians” was launched by Mr. and Mrs. Tendulkar. The cake presented to them on that occasion showed the moment in which he completed a century of centuries − a landmark reached by no one else in international cricket. He had dedicated the century to his father. To pack all these emotions into a dessert creation was no mean task, but with her training and passion, Shripriya was well up-to the task.

Based in Kolkata, Shripriya is a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu. Her inclination towards this art began in her childhood while watching her grandmother create traditional Indian sweets, turning raw ingredients almost magically into delicious mithais. Initially a student of Fashion Designing at NIFT, she realized that her heart remained in the kitchen, with the tastes, textures, warmth, and aroma of the desserts that she had tasted on her trips around the world with her father. She, therefore, opted first for an internship at Flury’s, and then for a course at the famed culinary school in London. Her work took her to Hyatt Bakeries and Patisserie, but she soon realized that her true path lay in opening her own patisserie, in which she could experiment to her heart’s content − a place where she could truly unite passion with profession and food with art.

The “Little Pleasures Patisserie”, a patisserie in the French style that combines global palates and trends with the hospitality of the City of Joy, was launched in 2007. The dessert boutique is specialized in customizable cakes for every special occasion. All you need is a doodle, and Shripriya will create culinary magnificence from it. This includes modifying the ingredients to suit special dietary needs. Some of her unique creations include a cake which glows in the dark and, astonishingly, a cake that levitates − the only of its kind in India. Retail dessert offerings are also available, and the cozy yet glamorous ambience is a bonus.

A few years ago, Shripriya launched her boutique studio. Situated in Loudon Street, the studio has curated a special collection of desserts.

Another boutique dessert café on Sarat Bose Road has been launched, with the special attraction of Illy Coffee − one of the biggest coffee brands from Italy. The café serves the perfect accompaniments too, with signature dishes like the Profiterole Pyramid, Lemon Cake, Salted Caramel Tart, and Mango tart, starting from the extremely affordable range of Rs 45.

The smile of a satisfied dessert-lover is Shripriya’s biggest motivation. “When you look back, it’s the little things that truly matter − the little pleasures are what make life worth living,” says Shripriya. “Here at Little Pleasures, we gift some of those moments to you.”
