On the 29th of July, Anjana Basu’s newest creation, ‘Eighteen Tides and the Tiger’ was launched at Oxford Bookstore. The book was released on the same day as World Tiger Day, adding more meaning and importance to the work. The panel included the author, Sabyasachi Chakravorty, Anik Dutt, Anjan Dutt, and Rishin Basu Roy.

The book is based in the Sundarbans, which is presented as an enigmatic and mystical place, shrouded in myths about tigers, strange beliefs and other subjects of wonder. The plot revolves around a young man who arrives at the land of the mangroves as an intern due to his fondness for tigers. Here, he strives to rescue these magnificent beasts and know more about them as he is faced with several challenges. The entire book is an adventure oozing with thrilling mysteries and intriguing characters. The author’s evident message of wildlife conservation was clear, as certain excerpts were read out to the audience, delighting all. Basu skillfully taps into the very essence of life at the Sundarbans, easily visible in her vivid descriptions of the marshy forests.

Issues of public ignorance were a part of the discourse. Extremely conversational, stories about personal experiences in the Sundarbans were shared among the audience.

The event concluded by the cutting of a celebratory cake. The discussions were insightful as well as interesting, just as the book is expected to be.
