The two-hour glittering ceremonial evening of the Bharat Nirman Awards saw a galaxy of persons from different walks of life being honored, while, in-between the conferrals, a number of well-choreographed dance sequences by the Indrani Dutta troupe and soulful songs by the popular singer Jojo  provided the entertainment quotient.  The  Lifetime Achievement award was conferred on litterateur Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay, and to Dr. H.P. Kanoria, industrialist and philathropist, while others were from the slots of Classical music, Acting, Societal Upliftment, Journalism, Public Relations, Entrepreneurship, Beauty Therapy, the Development of International Relationships, Real Estate, Fashion Design, and several institutional awards for CSR activities, to give a couple of instances − public service (Calcutta Police Sergeants Institute), services to the business fraternity (Calcutta Chamber of Commerce), and betterment of underprivileged children.

Bharat Nirman was set up in 1980 by M.C. Bhandari and following his death, the work that this charitable and public utility society was taken over by Ashok Kalanauria. The main objective of he society is to revive ancient Indian sciences and propagate the “Indian” way of life, culture and development. It has done this by organizing conferences, seminars and camps on a wide range of subjects from agricultural products, crafts and rural industries and solar energy to yoga, holistic healing, meditation, national integration. Its field activities have covered over 500 villages, the establishment of sister-organizations to fulfil its objectives, teaming up with NRIs to involve them in the country’s developmental process, brought out a number of publications and of course its Annual Awards across all fields of activity and professions. In its activities, many former Prime Ministers have participated, apart from scholars and experts in the literary and scientific world, who have been recipients of the Bharat Nirman.
